Am I “Weed Whacked”?

pulling weedsThe weeds are coming back again. Everyone knows that if you don't stay on top of the weeds they can get out of control. The majority of people don't have professionals taking care of their landscapes so they tend to pull the weeds themselves. I know this because I've had many patients come in this week with spines that were “out of whack” from pulling weeds or what I've termed as “weed whacked”.

 

“Weed whacked” is when someone bends over too long pulling weeds and wakes up the next morning with moderate to severe lower back or leg and hip pain on both sides. Our backs are not designed to be in a weed pulling position for a long time and the muscles and ligaments get overworked. Bending forward puts a lot of pressure on the discs in the spine and the front of the hip joints. The pain can last two days to three weeks depending on the severity of the tissue injury. Adjustments can dramatically reduce the healing time.

 

Ways to preventing getting “weed whacked” include:

 

  1. The easiest way to prevent getting “weed whacked” is to hire a landscaper.
  2. If you rather do it yourself the tools you use are critical. There are different tools to take weeds out of the grass as opposed to taking them out of rocks or gravel. They should have long handles so you can stand upright when working.
  3. If you have to get low to the ground, bend at the knees or sit on the ground.
  4. Stretch before and after you work.
  5. Don't overwork. Break the yard into sections and do a little bit everyday.
